Lapis – Building Process

A pile of earth is created at the desired location. It is surrounded by bags of soil, which help solidify the pile and make it easier to build vertically.

We dig into this mass, which will serve as formwork for the concrete. The excavation is slightly diagonal, creating sloped edges to visually lighten the sculpture.

The hole is lightly reinforced with steel rods driven into the ground to stabilize the shape and anchor it. The hole, the mold, the formwork is then filled with concrete. To reduce the amount of concrete needed, remnants of building blocks and other construction waste are added layer by layer.

Four days later, the mound is dismantled and appears a rock, a sculpture.
